Description
Cathedral interiors are almost always an amazing sight and the interior of St Stephen's Basilica in Budapest Hungary is no exception. For one thing, it's huge! It's said to be able to hold 8500 people at once. The church is named after Saint Stephen I of Hungary, the first King of Hungary (c. 975-1038). The architect called upon many of Hungary's most well-known sculptors and painters to contribute to the decoration of the inside of St. Stephen's. The incredibly ornate interior features about fifty different types of marble, elaborately decorated chapels, and many sculptures, including a statue of the basilica's patron saint, who was the first Christian king of Hungary. This is the central statue on the altar, carved out of Carrera marble. The archangel Gabriel stands above the small dome above St Stephen's statue, holding a crown above the head of the king. Special papal permission had to be granted to place the statue on the altar. St Stephen's Basilica is the most important church building in Hungary, one of the most significant tourist attractions, and the third highest building in Hungary. Even though the church wasn't initially designated a basilica, locals immediately started to refer to the church as 'the basilica' due to the building's sheer size. The name can now be officially used since pope Pius XI bestowed the church with the title of 'basilica minor' in 1931. And in 1993 the church was given the title of cathedral when the archdiocese of Esztergom became the archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest.
